Abstract
Objectives: Iontophoresis is the induction of ionized medications topically via low level electric current. This study evaluated clinical effectiveness of herb-iontophoresis for the pain management of musculoskeletal disease by comparing with common acupuncture treatment.

Methods: Patients were divided into iontophoresis and acupuncture group. Iontophoresis group was delivered ionized herb medicine via iontophoresis and acupuncture group was practised common acupuncture treatment when patients feel a bad pain. Pain levels were recorded at before treatment and 0, 10, 20, 30, 60, 120 miniute after treatment utilizing a visual analog pain scale(VAS) of 0-10. Then we analyzed the improvement score{(VAS of before treatment - VAS of each time after treatment)/VAS of before treatement ¡¿100(%)} and compared between iontophoresis group and acupuncture group.

Results and Conclusions: There were a total of 44 patients enrolled in the study, 26 in the iontophoresis group and 18 in the acupuncture group. The improvement score in iontophoresis group increased significantly until 30 minute after treatment and stagnated in some degree until 120 minute after treatment (P<0.05). The improvement score in acupuncture group increased significantly until 10 minute after treatment(P<0.05) and stagnated in some degree until 120 minute after treatment. Gap of improvement score between iontophoresis group and acupuncture group was not significant in each time.
